PPFA Certification
Earn the framer’s mark of excellence and advance your framing career by taking the PPFA Certified Picture Framer (CPF) exam, testing your knowledge in:

  • Preservation
  • Math
  • General Knowledge
  • Mounting
  • Mechanical

A CPF prep class will help you review your knowledge and skills, whether you’re taking the CPF exam in Las Vegas or at a later date. Thousands of professional framers worldwide have achieved CPF status since the program’s inception in 1986.

Maintain your CPF credentials by taking the one-day recertification course, a requirement for those who earned the CPF designation after 1993.

Framers ready to demonstrate mastery of preservation framing may take the Master Certified Picture Framer (MCPF) exam. There are also several MCPF advanced sessions at PPFA 2008 that meet the continuing education requirement for the MCPF designation.

F41 Hinging Light and Delicate Objects
Long-fibered Kozo (paper mulberry) tissues can make ideal hinges, which provide gentle steady support for even the most delicate and reactive of papers without any distortion of the sheet. These hinges rely on only the loose fibers, or feathers, being attached to the art and require new blotters, which have a synthetic stick-free layer and new paste application technique, for exact placement. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, attendees will have a firm understanding of the various options for securing paper-based items with starch paste and properly designed hinges. Speaker: Hugh Phibbs, National Gallery of Art

Friday, February 1 1:10 p.m. - 4:05 p.m.
F51 Object Mounting in Shadow Boxes
Shadow boxes can be very profitable! Framers must understand how to construct a shadow box and how to attach objects in ways that are reversible and non-damaging. Pricing will be discussed. Speakers: Nona Powers, MCPF, GCF, Nona Powers Framing Design; Paul Storch, Storch Conservation Services

Friday, February 1 4:20 p.m. - 6:20 p.m.
F61 Framing and Mounting Leather and Other Organic Materials
The oddest things show up in frame shops, with specific mounting and framing requirements! Learn the nature of these materials and the proper ways of preservation framing, and create a sample mount of a flat leather piece. Speaker: Paul Storch, Storch Conservation Services

Saturday, February 2 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
F81 Hinging Heavy and Oversized Objects
Vegetable starch paste is an adhesive that can hold formidable loads. Properly designed hinges, attached with paste, can hold the thickest watercolor paper and even four-ply board. The hinges may need to be laminated, attached to tissue pads where surfaces are weak, or applied to the perimeter of some objects, but in every case, they can be adhered with starch paste. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, attendees will have a firm understanding of the various options for securing paper-based items with starch paste and properly designed hinges. Speaker: Hugh Phibbs, National Gallery of Art
