An Evening With an Artist: Frans Lanting

The Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA) is excited to announce that famed photographer Frans Lanting will be featured in the Evening with an Artist series during the PMA 08 in Las Vegas.

Lanting, who is best known for his nature photography, has been featured in books, magazines and exhibitions around the world during his illustrious career. For more than two decades he has documented wildlife and man’s relationship with nature from the Amazon to Antartica. Through his work he has increased worldwide awareness of endangered species and environments around the globe.

He is a frequent contributor to National Geographic, where he is a Photographer-in-Residence, and has photographed the bonobos of central Africa and has circumnavigated by sailboat South Georgia Island in the subantarctic. He spent a year assessing global biodiversity which became the primary feature in the February 1999 issue of National Geographic.

Lanting has lived for months with seabirds on isolated atolls in the Pacific Ocean, followed lions through the African night, camped among giant tortoises inside a volcano in the Galapagos and spent weeks in tree canopies in the Amazon photographing wild macaws.

His numerous books include Bonobo, The Forgotten Ape (1997), Living Planet (1999), Jungles (2000), Forgotten Edens (1993) and his most recent project, Life: A Journey Through Time, which is a book and multimedia production on the evolution of life on earth. Copies of Life will be on sale following his presentation and Lanting will autograph copies.

Lanting has received numerous awards for his work, including the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club, Wildlife Photographer of the Year from the BBC and in 2001 he was inducted as a Knight in the Royal Order of the Golden Ark, the Netherlands’ highest conservation honor.
