What is PMA?

Over the 80 years of its existence, Photo Marketing Association International (PMAI) has grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of the continuously expanding imaging industry. At its inception in 1924, what is now PMA was called Photo Finishers Association of America — a group of 273 members started in Iowa by competitors Paul Burgess and T. R. Phillips. The purpose of the group, then and today, was to promote the growth of the industry through cooperation. In the 1930s, settled in its current home of Jackson, Michigan, USA, the association took on a new name, the Master Photo Dealers and Finishers’ Association, as the group expanded to include photographic dealers.

The association adopted its current identity, Photo Marketing Association International, in 1974 to reflect the importance of marketing in photofinishing and retailing. Today, PMA serves members from 100-plus countries. Additional offices outside of the United States:
• Australia • Brazil • Canada
• Czech Republic • France • Germany
• Italy • Latin America • New Zealand
• Russia • United Kingdom

Guiding and overseeing services to PMA members is a board of officers and trustees, comprised of:
•
a president
•
a president elect
•
a vice president
•
a treasurer
•
an executive director/secretary
•
trustees and trustees-at-large
•
national chairpersons representing eight countries

PMA also strives to meet the needs of its diverse and widespread membership through the use of territorial offices, each led by a Territorial Vice President (TVP). TVPs direct the activities within their respective divisions or regions; assist with PMA conventions; recruit and welcome new PMA members; assist with member renewals; hold regional meetings; and report on those meetings to PMA headquarters.

Advisory committees, representing each segment of the industry, meet at PMA headquarters annually to suggest and develop convention and educational programs, market research, publications issues, business resources and convention programming. They also discuss ways PMA can better serve each segment of the industry. PMA staff members function as liaisons to different groups within the association. They endeavor to be a source of information on the latest trends, developments and concerns of the various divisions.
